Currency Converter in Windows 10

In response to one of Microsoft’s top customer requests, there’s now a Currency Converter included in the native Calculator. Travelling internationally? Even works offline for when you want to avoid connection charges. Select the menu button on the top left to switch between a standard calculator and the currency converter.

People-first Sharing

If you already have some of your favourite people pinned to your taskbar (see my last article, if you want to know how to do this), you can now more easily share files. Sharing is as easy as dragging a file directly onto the pinned contacts in your taskbar.

My People

Get quick access to your top people! Now you can pin your top people to the taskbar for one-click access to those who matter most. Communication apps, starting with Mail and Skype, come up together custom-filtered by individual. Tap on your pinned contact to send an email or chat using Skype without having to open the apps.  Open the People App, right click on a contact and choose Pin to Taskbar.

How to create a system image backup of Windows 10

Follow these simple steps to create a system image backup of your PC, so in the event your computer fails you can use this to restore everything from the full Win 10 installation, settings, files, apps or even any additional drives you have connected.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click on System and Security.
  3. Click on Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
  4. On the left pane, click the Create a system image link.
  5. Under “Where do you want to save the backup?” select the On a hard disk option. Using the “On a hard disk” drop-down menu, select the storage to save the backup.
  6. Click next, then the Start backup button.

Block Notifications

Windows PC never stops ‘notifying’ you on everything, whether it’s a software update that’s available or an app notification. If you get annoyed by all these interruptions, there’s an easy way to turn it off.

To do this head over to Settings > System and Notifications and actions and turn whatever notifications annoy you the most off.

Dark Theme

If you are tired of the standard, ordinary Windows look, the Windows dark theme could be your answer. Initially the darker theme could only be enabled through the registry, but now we can turn it on with minimal effort.

Head over to the Settings > Personalisation > Colours, scroll down and choose Dark as the app mode. You can also switch of your app colours here by choosing any colour from the palette shown.

Be sure to explore the other features of this mode and you might end up with a very different looking desktop.

Move Windows between Virtual Desktops

To move windows, bring up the Task View and drag an open window from the current desktop straight into the desktop you want to move it into. Or drag a window to the ‘new desktop’ button in order to create a new virtual desktop for the window.

Creating a Virtual Desktop

The ability to have multiple desktops running at the same time is now built-in to Windows 10 and it’s great. Whether you have a lot of apps open, or several documents open all at once, virtual desktops lets you organise your space.

To set one up is very simple, tap or click on the small icon – or press Windows key + Tab – to the right of the Cortana search bar and this will bring up all of the your open windows. If you look to the bottom right hand corner you should see the option to ‘+ New desktop‘.

A simple use for this could be keeping work separate from personal stuff, or putting all items relating to one task on one desktop, so you can better focus on that project.

Battery Saver

Windows 10 is smart enough to begin clawing back background services when the battery on your laptop is running low. When Battery Saver is turned on, it makes sure you can squeeze every last morsel of battery life out of your machine. To enable Battery Saver, click the Start menu, and head to Settings | System | Battery Saver.
